The 1st Birbhum Zilla Loksangeet & Adivasi Nritya Mela, from 2nd to 4th October 2001, at Geetanjali, a world class air-conditioned auditorium in Shantiniketan, organised under the aegis of Shantiniketan Shamman by Mark Meadows, the finest 3 star retreat resort at Shantiniketan and Jhalak, a local TV news channel, and supported by the Dept. of Tourism, Govt. of India, West Bengal Tourism and Bolpur & Sriniketan Panchayat Sammittee. The festival has been conceived as an annual event to establish Shantiniketan firmly on the map of Rural & Folk Tourism. Tour operators and travel agents are being invited to promote the Mela as a unique tourism event. To ensure greater participation entry to the venue is free for everyone.

Keeping in mind the theme for this year set by the World Tourism Organisation on the occasion of World Tourism Day on 27th September, "Tourism – a tool for peace & dialogue among civilisations", the Birbhum Zilla Loksangeet & Adivasi Nritya Mela becomes all the more relevant.

The Mela will provide tribal and folk artistes a platform to display their heritage and talent. Featuring tribal dances like the Ghora Nritya (Horse Dance), Dang, Karam, Shaharay, Raha, Dashai, Natua (War Dance) & Danta (Dance on stilts) and songs like Kokili, Bhadu & Baul, and many more, the Mela promises to be an audiovisual treat for the music lover and the tourist alike.
